Ashley Young has come to the defence of his team-mate David De Gea, claiming that the keeper will come back quickly for Manchester United after his Real Madrid transfer nightmare, as reported by the Daily Star.
De Gea’s proposed move back to his homeland went up in flames on Monday night when the deal wasn’t completed in time due to vital paperwork going through too late, as the Spanish transfer window closed.
United were meant to be getting Los Blancos keeper Keylor Navas as part of the deal that would see De Gea going in the opposite direction, but now that it’s fallen through the latter will likely stay at Old Trafford until the end of the season.
The 24-year-old has one year left on his current contract, and Louis van Gaal has already said that he would like to see De Gea back in a United shirt as soon as possible, as reported by the Daily Star.
The Spaniard was one of United’s star-men last season, keeping 11 clean-sheets in 37 Premier League appearances and averaging 2.17 saves-per-goal, with a distribution success of 69%.
Young commended the shot-stopper, outlining his ability to deal with the matter at hand, saying: “David is a professional. Always has been, always will be.”
The two players signed for United less than a week apart back in June 2011, when De Gea joined from Atletico Madrid for a Premier League transfer record for a keeper.
Speaking of the United squad, Young added: “The team spirit and the team bond we have here is fantastic. That will continue.”
De Gea’s first opportunity to make a return to the United starting XI will come against Liverpool at Old Trafford after the international break.
