"There is no reconciliation," says a source. "They are working with a professional because there are emotions involved and they want to make this transition as easy as possible for their family."
The pair were spotted leaving a family counseling center in L.A. Thursday, and later photographed out together smiling.
It was the couple's first visit to the center since they announced their split in June. The duo once attended weekly counseling sessions at the center, but stopped going in the months leading up to their separation.
However, the duo and their three children, Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3, spent time together this summer, including in Atlanta while Garner, 43, filmed Miracles From Heaven and a family trip to Disney World to ring in Affleck's 43rd birthday.
"They are working together and are keeping it amicable," a source close to the couple also tells PEOPLE. "This is something they have been working on for over a year – and they continue to be strong unit."
The second source also says they're choosing to remain friendly for reasons that extend beyond parenting.
"It's not just for the kids – it's also for them," says the source. "They care about each other."
Since returning to L.A. late last month, Garner and the kids are currently living in the family home, which is under renovation, while Affleck is staying at a rental down the street.
