4 reasons Arsenal’s transfer strategy means they won’t win the league

1) Lack of a top class striker

Arsenal went into yet another season without one top striker. Danny Welbeck was a £16 million panic signing who scored just four goals last season and clearly showed that the side need better players here. Olivier Giroud simply isn’t going to win a team the title, nor is an injury prone Theo Walcott or a misfiring Welbeck. The side have only scored three goals this season in their four games, firing blanks in the 0-2 defeat to West Ham and the 0-0 draw with Liverpool. The current options aren’t going to score 20+ goals a season which is a big problem. Arsenal can’t win the league with their current options.

2) No quality cover at defensive midfield

Francis Coquelin emerged last season to help improve Arsenal’s defensive midfield options, which were certainly weak last year. He stemmed the tide and helped solidify the side a bit. Arsenal were porous in the midfield and easy to get at. Coquelin is decent but he’s not a world class performer. His rise just highlights how weak Arsenal are in this area. Mikel Arteta is old and immobile so unlikely to provide what the side need. The fact that he is still the only cover here was a grave mistake. Players were available particularly Schneiderlin who ended up at United.

3) A lack of alternative options

There simply isn’t much quality variation within Arsenal’s squad. The squad lacks real ability in depth. There is a decent 11 without any world class performers (minus Petr Cech). When there is a major injury there is a concern over the quality. Who is going to come in and make a difference? The squad is thin and needed some additions. Wenger only brought in Petr Cech which was a real error and cost the side any real chance of winning the title.

4) Defensive reshuffling

The back four is still questionable. Despite the fact that the side added Petr Cech there are still clear structural problems facing the side. The two goals shipped against West Ham for instance, or the wy the side buckled against Liverpool (only to be bailed out by Cech). The way the defence opened up was about individuals and the structure as a whole. Arsenal still rely on Per Mertesacker who is not a top defender. In fact they don’t have one world class defender which was a grave error from Wenger. The club need more quality.
