SPORTS: Fabregas can handle the pressure (Mourinho)

Cesc Fabregas played 121 passes for Chelsea in the win over Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says Cesc Fabregas’ time at FC Barcelona has taught him how to deal with pressure, even when he is struggling for form, per Miguel Delaney.

The Blues’ nightmare season continued on Saturday night with a 3-1 defeat at home to Southampton, piling the pressure on Mourinho. Chelsea sit 16th, while main title rivals Manchester City got their season back on track with an emphatic 6-1 victory over lowly Newcastle.

Fabregas, 28, signed for the club last summer and was one of the main protagonists for their success. His 18 assists were the most in the Premier League and inspired his side to the title, but this year he has been one of a number of high profile under performers at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho, though, has backed the midfielder, claiming he knows how to handle any situation thanks to his three seasons at Camp Nou.

The boss was in defiant mood yesterday, saying he would not resign. He also warned the club would not find a better man for the job than him (Goal), but owner Roman Abramovich is notoriously impatient when it comes to his coaches.

After a week off for the international break, Chelsea’s latest attempt to kickstart their season sees them host a struggling Aston Villa side.
