The Blues take on Arsenal this Sunday (3.00pm) in the Premier League curtain raiser and Mourinho believes the stakes are high.
Although not as intense as a Premier League match, Mourinho admits the desire to win is still there as it sets a precedent for the season.
He said: “I think it's in between. It's not a friendly like against Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain or Arsenal against Wolfsburg
“It's more than that, but it's less than a Premier League match.”
And Mourinho admits he’s keen to put the pre-season defeat to Red Bull Salzburg behind him and get back to winning ways, whatever the circumstances.
He added: “We lost against Red Bull and we were not happy. So it's normal that we always try to play for a result.
“And Community Shield has a motivation, obviously different than just a friendly or just a summer tournament. I would say it's the start of the competition.”
