U.I announces plan to expel 328 first-year students for “shameful academic performance”

University of Ibadan announces plan to expel 328 first-year students for ?shameful academic performance?
University of Ibadan (UI) has announed plans to expel 328 first-year students for what it described as “shameful academic performance” in the recently concluded 2016/2017 session.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, in a statement yesterday, blamed the situation on the absence of post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (post-UTME) screening test before the affected students and their set were admitted.

According to Olayinka, the university compiled the list of the affected students following the meeting of the university Senate of March 19 and 20, where they deliberated on the 2016/2017 academic session results of the final year and other students.

He said the students did not meet up with the minimum academic benchmark or requirements approved by the university Senate, adding that one out of every nine students in 100-Level did not meet the minimum condition to retain their studentship.

The Vice-Chancellor hinted: “It can be observed that students in the science-based disciplines, in particular, did not perform too well, with the pass rate being lowest at 67.5 per cent at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. On the other hand, the Humanities-based discipline posted better results, with the best coming from the Faculty of Law at 99.2 per cent.”

He, however, blamed the shameful performance on the failure to conduct the yearly post-UTME test for students admitted to the university for the 2016/2017.
