Marcelo Bielsa resigns as manager of Lazio after just two days in charge

Former Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa has resigned as manager of Lazio after just two days in charge, the Serie A club said in a statement on Friday.

The club earlier said that the former Argentina and Chile coach and his staff were expected to arrive in Rome on Saturday, adding that his coaching contract had already been filed with the Italian FA.

'We note with amazement the resignation of Mr Marcelo Bielsa ... in a clear violation of the commitments undertaken in the agreements signed last week,' Lazio said, adding that it reserved the right to take legal action.

Prior to taking up the Lazio job, the 60-year-old coach was strongly linked with a second stint with Argentina, with his departure from the Stadio Olimpico club coming just three days after Gerardo Martino's resignation.

Bielsa, who quit French side Olympique de Marseille after the first match of last season, had a six-year spell as Argentina boss between 1998-2004, guiding them to gold in the 2004 Olympics in Athens and to the final of the 2004 Copa America.

Simone Inzaghi, who has acted as interim manager since Stefano Pioli's departure in April, will be in charge of the Lazio for their summer training camp.

Lazio are a sleeping giant of Italian football, having not won Serie in 16 years, following their success in 2000 under Sven Goran Eriksson.

They have won three Coppa Italia titles during that time but have endured struggles off the pitch, with financial problems and their involvement in the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal in 2006.

The club finished eighth in last season's Serie A as they missed out on European football, while neighbours Roma finished third to secure a place in the Champions League.

Bielsa was set to be Lazio's 12th permanent manager following the departure of Eriksson, to England in 2001, with Inzaghi in interim charge as they prepare for the start of the new season.
