Cesc Fabregas’ Chelsea future in doubt as Antonio Conte questions his suitability

Cesc Fabregas‘ future at Chelsea is unclear as new manager Antonio Conte is reportedly unsure of the Spaniard’s suitability to his tactical setup.

After being knocked out of the European Championships last week, Conte will now finally take over at Stamford Bridge as first-team manager and can begin to make the relevant changes he’s been planning since agreeing to take the job in April.

The blueprint of Italian’s tactical style is to defend well in numbers and win as a team and he’s set to implement that at Chelsea in a 4-4-2 system.

His 3-5-2 setup worked excellently at Euro 2016 before the Azzurri’s heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Germany, but he will switch formation with the Blues.

With Conte set to make a number of changes, one is reportedly to be Fabregas who, according to The Times, faces a fight to keep his place in the team with the ex-Juventus manager unsure of his suitability to the side.

Fabregas is an excellent passer of the ball and creates plenty of chances, but it’s been reported that Conte isn’t convinced with the Spaniard’s athletic ability or resilience required to play in a central two of a midfield four.

Conte certainly admires the Spaniard’s talent on the ball, which was evident last season as he completed the most passes (2278) in the Premier League, but the ex-Barcelona star certainly has to knuckle down and prove that he can be a vital player in the Italian’s debut season in English football.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old expressed his excitement about working with Conte in the build up to Spain’s last-16 clash with Italy last month and was full of praise for his new manager.
