ARSENE Wenger might have beaten Jose Mourinho for the first time… but his feud with the Chelsea boss continued at Wembley as he appeared to snub the Special One’s offer of a handshake.
And on Sunday night, Match of the Day pundits Martin Keown and Jermaine Jenas called for the bosses to do the decent thing and end the squabling with a handshake.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s thunderous first-half goal was enough to give Arsenal manager Wenger a first win over Mourinho in 14 attempts in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.
Yet the occasion was somewhat marred by Wenger dodging Mourinho as the victorious Arsenal team descended from the Royal Box presentation. Loser Mourinho had sportingly placed himself near the foot of the steps and shook hands or embraced every Arsenal player after they collected their medals (pictured above).
But Wenger appeared to dodge the encounter and walked behind his rival towards the tunnel.
Something similar occurred immediately after the final whistle when Wenger walked directly down the tunnel, making the traditional hand-shake impossible. His assistant, Steve Bould, carried out that duty instead.
“I was doing what I think the status of my club and my status as a manager have to do,” Mourinuo was quoted by Mail Online, “which is be there for the winners, to wait for them.
“I was at a point that you only miss me if you want to miss me – and every Arsenal player came in my direction which was the easiest thing to do because I was just there.
“If other people didn’t come in my direction that is not a problem, not a story and not the end of the world. I did my job, the job that my club deserves me to do and the status as a manager when I lose any trophy.
“Would I have shaken his [Wenger’s] hand? I don’t need to answer that. You see the images and see where I am – so to ask is not a fair question.”
But Wenger denied snubbing his Chelsea rival, saying: “I shook a few hands after the game, but there’s nothing special there,” the Mail Online reported.
So the feud continues, it seems…
