Chelsea ended their tour of the US with a 4-2 penalties victory
following an entertaining 2-2 draw with European Champions Barcelona,
with the future of a promising 19-year-old being one of the talking
points after the game.
Kenedy, still a trialist with the Blues, started the match at FedExField and impressed Jose Mourinho, who is hopeful that the Fluminense will get a work permit once the transfer is finalised as he does not wish for the player to go out on loan.
The winger has not made a senior appearance for Brazil it is unlikely that he’ll be successful despite his appearances at youth level so will likely have to be loaned out to Vitesse for a season, like Bertrand Traore before him, before he can join the Chelsea squad.
However, his display against Barcelona gave Chelsea fans a taster of what he’s all about. He’s left-footed but plays on the right so would be at home in the current setup, balancing with Eden Hazard who cuts in from the opposite flank onto his dominant right foot.
Aside from being an exciting prospect going forward he looked willing to track back and didn’t shy away from physical encounters, which Mourinho probably enjoyed above all else from his 45 minutes.
With the likes of Oscar, Willian and Brazilian-born Diego Costa in the squad, Stamford Bridge could be a comfortable environment for him to settle and learn which is all the more pity that we are unlikely to see him there any time soon.
Having acquired and loaned out a significant amount of talent during the last decade or so it is natural that any signing such as Kenedy is viewed with scepticism as many tend to be sold on for profit, with Thibaut Courtois being the only example in the current first team who earned his spot by his accomplishments abroad, it can only be a matter of time before a Kenedy makes a breakthrough as recruiting and developing young talent appears to be part of Mourinho’s remit.
