FIFA president Gianni Infantino has proposed a 32-team expansion to the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019.
Despite its name, the Club World Cup is not highly regarded by football fans.In almost every edition,
the continental champions of Europe and South America face each other in the final, making the tournament predictable and unexciting. Infantino believes that shaking up the competition’s format will create new enthusiasm for the tournament.Infantino said that currently the tournament “has a complicated formula held at a difficult time, attracting little enthusiasm.”“But in summer, from June 10 to 30, with 32 of the world’s best clubs!” he suggested to Gazzetta dello Sport.“Football nowadays isn’t just Europe and South America,” Infantino told Mundo Deportivo
“The world has changed, so we have to find a Club World Cup which will be more interesting for the teams, as well as the fans around the world,” he added.
Japan 2016
The 2016 edition takes place next month in Japan with Real Madrid, Club America, Auckland City and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns among the competitors.
