Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal insists that he is testing Memphis Depay by playing him as a second striker but admits that he is not against moving him back out to the left wing should it not work out, he told MUTV via the club’s official website.
The Dutch sensation moved to Old Trafford in a big money deal, the attacker is earning £150,000-a-week at Old Trafford, as per the Telegraph. However, during his debut against Tottenham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season he was asked to play as no.10.
Van Gaal admits that he’s challenging Depay by playing him in an unfamiliar position.
“I prefer that position to be more a second striker than a third midfielder. I want to see Memphis in that role, of course,” he told MUTV.
“It is also, for him, maybe more difficult because he has to make the step to the Premier League, to Manchester United, a new club. Maybe I shall use him also at the left-wing position because he knows that much better.”
Against Spurs, Depay performed well but failed to set the Theatre of Dreams alight. He was a steady influence on the game, registering an 86% pass accuracy, but he failed to create a chance or complete a single take on, something he has been renowned for during his career thus far.
Depay arrived at the Red Devils on the back of a fabulous season for PSV Eindhoven last campaign, which saw him finish as Eredivisie’s leading goalscorer with 22 goals.
His strikes helped the club to their first league title in seven years and his superb displays all came when he was deployed on the left-hand side.
