Chelsea captain John Terry admitted he was hurt by his side's Community Shield defeat by Arsenal on Sunday, but made it clear that it would have no impact on the Barclays Premier League title race this season.
The champions were beaten 1-0 by the FA Cup winners at Wembley courtesy of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's first-half goal and despite the 'friendly' billing of the game, Terry was gutted to miss out on silverware.
But with some commentators speculating about a beefed-up presence from Arsenal in this season's title race, Terry has shot down hopes that Sunday's result could have a psychological impact.
The 34-year-old agreed with manager Jose Mourinho's assessment that Chelsea were the better side on the day, despite their failure to register a shot on target until the 66th minute.
'I thought we were on top, if anything,' Terry said. 'These games are always a bit slow with players finding their feet and fitness, but it's disappointing we didn't win.'
Chelsea boss Mourinho finally fell to defeat against arch-rival Wenger on the 14th meeting between the two, and Terry felt the loss of that record added to the pain that the final whistle brought.
'Losing is just horrible in all aspects... forgetting the record, it's a trophy that's gone now,' he said. 'It means a lot, because you've earned the right to be here so we're just disappointed.
'It hurts, it doesn't matter if it's a friendly or the Community Shield - it's a trophy at the end of the day.'
But when quizzed on whether Arsenal's win could impact upon the title race ahead, Terry added: 'I don't think so. I think it's one of them where they'll probably come out and say differently. They do mean something, but win or lose, I don't think you can say that (it will affect the league).'
Chelsea now face Fiorentina in a friendly at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night before opening up their title defence against Swansea City at the same venue on Sunday.
Radamel Falcao will get his first start against the Italian outfit as Mourinho looks to cope with the realisation that Diego Costa could miss the start of the season with a hamstring issue causing problems once again.
Terry felt the first-choice forward's direct threat was missed out on the Wembley turf but he backed loan signing Falcao and Sunday starter Loic Remy to provide able back-up should they need to.
'He's a top player so he's going to be missed in all sides,' Terry said of Costa in quotes reported by Goal. 'It was a chance for Loic to stamp his authority in the side, and Falcao second half, it's down to them boys to fight for their place.'
