US House shows bipartisan support for US military aid to Israel

The United States House of Representatives is showing bipartisan support for the US military aid to Israel, which some have suggested should be tied Tel Aviv’s commitment to the so-called two-state solution.
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are amending a resolution, supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli and Palestinian conflict, which will go to a vote on the House floor this week.

Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) and Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) submitted the amendments to the Rules Committee for H.R. 326.
The amendments expressed “the sense of the House of Representatives regarding United States efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a negotiated two-state solution."
They also called on the US to “stand by its ironclad commitments” to provide military aid to Israel amid its aggression on Palestinians.
Some 2020 Democratic candidates, such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), have suggested using the military aid package to make Israel come to the negotiating table with the Palestinians.
“I would use the leverage — $3.8 billion is a lot of money, and we cannot give it carte blanche,” said the Vermont senator at the J Street conference in October.
Ever since US President Donald Trump appeared in office, Israel has abandoned its stated efforts for a two-state solution and has instead increased grabbing land, from Jerusalem al-Quds to Syria’s Golan Heights and the illegal settlements made on Palestinians’ lands.
