Hakeem struggles to find a place for his fiancé, Laura, in his career and family; Cookie reveals the truth about Freda’s father to Jamal; Jamal makes a sacrifice for Lucious.
To recap the last episode, Lucious and the hilarious Cookie were made co-CEOs of Empire, after the board members realized how well the ex-lovers work together after producing a benefit. The fundraisers never seem to benefit anyone but the Lyons, but that was the whole point of last episode anyway: to regain power. Lucious had initially wanted to prove to the board that he should be reinstated as CEO of his company after being betrayed by his youngest rapper son, Hakeem. But then, without little surprise to viewers, Cookie and Lucious were placed in the coveted position of power together. Despite their love-hate relationship and witty banter exchanged between them in every scene, they really do make a good team—just not a good couple.
Fans will want to watch this episode, because the fictional American Sound Awards (the ASAs) are finally here and after watching the trailer, we can tell this is one episode that can’t be watched later than Wednesday night—or else you’ll be left out of all the Empire after-show conversations. Sometimes just discussing the shows plot twists is honestly the best part for fans; it’s like any after party after an award show. Spoiler alert! There’s a shooting at the ASAs and Cookie is seen crying over someone and we are wondering who it could be?!
Jamal is also getting some dram of his own when he’s seen being kissed by another rapper in the studio. But the unknown rapper pushes Jamal away just in time before Lucious walks in, which of course starts a fight between the two Lyons. Looks like Lucious is about to say some horrible things to his son about his s”;xuality again. Will Jamal ever find a man that’s good enough for him? And will Lucious ever stop being an a;;;? Probably not for the latter, but we can hope.
Speaking of family drama, Andre brought Grandma Lyon out of hiding, and Lucious is scared! This is a man who killed Bunky and didn’t lose sleep or even sweat in prison over it, but a little old lady has him worried? Lucious’ mother was played by singer Kelly Rowland in flashbacks, and it was revealed that she had bipolar disorder and apparently was a danger to Lucious. The events seem to have him scarred and he wants as far away from her as possible.
