Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are the subjects of the upcoming four-part HBO documentary The Defiant Ones, directed by Menace II Society’s Allen Hughes. In a recent interview with Uproxx, Hughes spoke of the relationship between Dre’s business focus and his musical endeavors. According to the filmmaker, the billion-dollar headphone industry has not stopped the superproducer from getting in the studio.
“Dre still records. People don’t know this: Dre records every day. Literally, he’s in there recording songs every day. He’s like Picasso in that way. He’s always painting,” he said.
Most notably, Dre has been working with Eminem on his upcoming project, which sounds like it might be well on its way to completion. “Right now he’s producing, in the 11th hour, a track for Eminem’s latest album,” revealed Hughes.
Eminem has not shared a title or release date for what would be his ninth studio album. In fact, this quote is pretty much the only clue we have to its existence. Last October, the Detroit rapper released a hookless, almost entirely drumless 8-minute track called “Campaign Speech.” His last studio album was The Marshall Mathers LP II in 2013.
Em recently debuted a new beard to the shock of the internet; could it be a sign that he’s been spending some late nights in the studio?
